...and What You Can Do About it


 

  1. Learn about trafficking and slavery. Read books, attend awareness events, screenings, join a blog or start one.
  2. Talk about it. Not everyone knows about trafficking and slavery, talk about it with your friends, family and co-workers.
  3. Use social media to spread the word. Post facts about trafficking, slavery and event notices on Facebook and Twitter.
  4. Volunteer at CASTLA, FreetheSlaves, PolarisProject, Anti-slavery, some of the non-profit organizations doing ground breaking work fighting slavery.
  5. Write a blog. Keep the public engaged by blogging about trafficking and slavery facts, stories, resources, legislations and events.
  6. Visit The Library of Congress Thomas to stay abreast of pending trafficking and slavery bills.
  7. Adopt a liberator. Help the heroes who risk their lives to free slaves. Please, click FreetheSlaves for more information.
  8. Start a petition. Contact local representatives about passing legislation that cracks down on traffickers.
  9. Start a ChainStoreReaction. Send email letters to hundreds of importers and encourage them to take slavery out of their products.
  10. Report crime. If you suspect an illegal activity call the National Human Trafficking Training Resource Center 1-888-3737-888.
  11. Support Fair Trade products. As a consumer you have a voice that can be heard. Support fair and lawful labor practices.
  12. Get fellow students involved. Form awareness group at your school or join existing groups to fight against trafficking and slavery.
  13. Join the movement by signing up to receive updates, Antislavery, PolarisProject, Free the Slaves, CASTLA.
  14. Contact local media. Live in an area where trafficking and slavery are problems? Ask local reporters to cover it.
  15. Turn awareness into art. Make trafficking and slavery a theme of a song, poem, play, film, documentary, upload it on YouTube.
  16. Create a resource exchange. Consolidate your trafficking and slavery resources with those of your friends and family.
  17. Host an anti-trafficking expert at your school or get trained. This is an excellent way to inform friends, students and your community.

  19. Shop online to help furnish apartments for trafficking survivors.
  20. Start an anti-trafficking Meetup online. Polish your leadership skills, inspire people, BE that change.
  21. Speak a language other than English? Consider creating a web page resource in that language.

  23. Read the book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
